A little history about us
Delhi has been at the centre of history in India. Like Ghalib used to say “Ek roz apni rooh se poochha ke dilli kya hai, to yun jawaab mein keh gayi, ye duniya maano jism hai aur Dilli uski jaan.”
Thus, it is not surprising that every nook and corner in this city has its own rich history – something Jawahar Hotel can well boast of. A Mughlai restaurant in the former capital of Mughals named Jawahar – meaning a Gem.
It was in the 1890s, when Mr Bashiruddin was born in British ruled India, that had forgotten the riches of Mughal rule. And with it the delectable cuisine. But, Mr Bashiruddin aka Bacchu Ustad had a habit of traveling around the world and trying out new cuisines. Yet, his favourite was the Mughlai cuisine – Aakhir Dil Hai Hindustani. And thus, he decided to bring back the old world taste of the Mughal kitchens in his restaurant named Peshawari which he started at Matia Mahal, near Jama Masjid in Delhi in 1940s.
Bacchu Ustad, like the Mughal cuisine, he liked was a colorful and vibrant personality. He was engaged in Horse Racing, as he owned the Finest Horses from around the world in his stable, and was also a wrestler. But, it was his engagement in Public Welfare and Freedom Struggle that led to his closeness with Jawaharlal Nehru, the first PM of India, who inaugurated the restaurant after its renovation post independence and thus, the restaurant was renamed Jawahar – a tribute to the ethos of the first leader of Independent India.
After Bacchu Ustad died in 1977, his son Raisuddin carried forward his legacy and helped the restaurant reach new heights with his expertise in Mughal cuisine. And it is because of his efforts that the restaurant has two locations – the one in Dilli-6 and the one in Okhla.
Yet, the dream of Bacchu Ustad lives on. We seek to keep his memory alive and strive to reach different parts of the city with our history and the original taste of Mughlai cuisine as Bacchu Ustad taught us. His Mughlai Chicken, Mutton Korma, Mutton Burra and Chicken Jahangiri is our favourite.
Enjoy the history and legacy through our plates.
